Hi Writers,
After a sweltering summer, we’re looking forward to the ease of Autumn. Still, we couldn’t wrap up our Summer of Play without making you a lil’ scrapbook of our time together.
June
In June, school was out everywhere except for Writers Club. We hosted a zine-making workshop with SPICY and Mi Casita BK, a bilingual school in BedStuy, and the creativity was on FULL display!
July
In July, we gathered in BK Rot’s Know Waste Lands garden for a night of poetry inspired by regeneration. We made new poems from words in an old book and Bed Stuy Book Club organized a reading where poets read among the trees, pausing occasionally to let the M train pass.
Later that month, we invited Ariana Brown to host their poetry workshop “Love, Names, and Odes.” Members wrote love letters to their girlfriends, neighbors, and themselves. Francisco took this photo of our Zoom call from their desk in PR. The affirmation on their whiteboard says “July is going to be a great month.” It was.
August
In August, Writers Club did its second California tour this year!
In San Francisco, we hosted our first in-person workshop, “Approaching the Essay with Design Thinking,” led by the incredible and our dear friend, Daniel Sanchez Torres at Medicine for Nightmares, one of our favorite SF bookstores.
Finally, we did something we’ve never done before: we opened a new chapter of Writers Club in a new city. And Los Angeles showed up! We loved meeting a lot of our virtual Writers Club members in real life and we were happy to make new friends. Here are we (again) looking cute AF at our first club meeting.
So what’s next? 👀
If you’re in LA, you can join our second club meeting at Barnsdall Art Park on September 23rd.
And New York, we have something special coming for you too! Keep an eye on your inbox for first access to our next offering 😉
In the meantime, we hope you get to do some Fall shit. Hay ride? Apple picking? Wearing that first sweater? We want it all for you.
Love,
Francisco + Nicole
